Being moderately overweight is Healthier than being underweight
This 12 year study of BMI and mortality in 11,326 adult Canadians showed increased risk of mortality in the thin (BMI <18.5) and 'obese' (BMI >35). However, there was a decreased risk of death for the overweight (BMI 25 to <30). Researchers stated, "Our results are similar to those from other recent studies, overweight appears to be protective against mortality." – www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19543206.
This is supported by a BMI and mortality study in 26,747 Japanese studied for 11 years. The underweight group had higher risk of mortality. Even the lower normal-range group showed an elevated risk.
